Crossing the genre boundaries of dance to collaborate boldly with a range of artistic fields, the company drives contemporary sensation and relentless questions about human existence onto the stage. Since its founding, SAL has presented work early on at major stages and festivals at home and abroad, including MODAFE and SIDance, expanding a language entirely its own.
The company’s name carries both the Korean word ‘sal’ (flesh) and the concept of a Subverted Anatomical Landscape. Rather than reading the body as a fixed form or function, it insists on seeing the body as a terrain of sensation that is constantly deformed and in collision. Within that gaze, the body becomes a living landscape: the organs hidden beneath the skin, the nerve responses the will cannot reach, the traces left by memory and emotion, the impulses that surface and dissolve in the unconscious. The work begins by drawing these invisible motions up onto the stage.
Here, choreography is not a technique for arranging movement but a method for dissecting the human being. SAL reconfigures the circuits of thought and the irregular pulse of the organs concealed inside the shell of ‘flesh’ through an avant-garde language of the body and a charged visual structure, pulling the memory, desire, and fear accumulated in the body to the surface. For this reason, even an identical structure of movement is reborn as an entirely different narrative the moment it passes through each individual body.
SAL’s stage often unfolds as a dystopian landscape. Distorted space, precise lighting and sound, and the structures of a dismantled body accumulate into an unfamiliar, unsettling world, and the audience loses its habitual distance of spectatorship within it. This is why many describe a SAL performance as an experience unlike anything they have seen before. The auditorium becomes less a place to watch a performance than a place to confront one’s own body and senses anew.
Even when that world moves toward darkness, darkness is never the destination. Loss and lack, anxiety and anger, and the longing for love are the starting points of creation, yet SAL seeks out the vitality and the possibility of love that remain within a person even in the deepest wound. This stance leads to SAL’s guiding philosophy, ‘The Radiance of Liberated Humanity.’ Movement and music, space and lighting, costume and theatrical structure are bound together into a single organic language in service of that aim.
Through ceaseless experimentation, SAL pushes at the boundaries of body and identity, consciousness and the unconscious, mapping a terrain of the body that can be revealed through movement alone. Its stage offers no finished answers. Instead, it awakens the sensations and memories that lay dormant within the body, and something that has not yet become language.
(The Radiance of Liberated Humanity)'라는 SAL의 철학으로 이어진다.
