About SAL
SAL approaches the body as a living landscape. Beneath the skin lie organs, neurological impulses, memories, emotions, and unconscious drives that surface in movement before thought can name them. The company’s work begins by bringing these invisible movements to the surface.
The name SAL combines the Korean word for “flesh” with the idea of a Subverted Anatomical Landscape. Rather than viewing the body as a fixed structure, SAL understands it as a shifting terrain where sensation, memory, desire, and instinct are constantly in motion.
For SAL, choreography is not the arrangement of movement but a way of revealing what is embedded within the body. Through movement, the company explores the relationship between physicality, memory, emotion, and human vulnerability. Its works confront darkness not as an end point, but as a passage toward the radiance that can only be found beyond it.
This pursuit is guided by SAL’s central philosophy: The Radiance of Liberated Humanity.
The company’s creative process is informed by MAGI, an original movement methodology developed by Jinho Bae. MAGI prioritises the body’s autonomous responses, investigating movement through heightened sensation, liberated impulse, and subconscious awareness.
SAL creates works that invite audiences into an encounter with the body’s hidden landscapes, awakening sensations, memories, and forces that exist beyond language.
SAL은 신체를 하나의 살아있는 지형으로 바라본다. 피부 아래 감춰진 기관들, 의지로 통제할 수 없는 신경 반응, 기억과 감정이 남긴 흔적들, 그리고 무의식 속에서 끊임없이 생성되고 소멸하는 충동들. SAL의 작업은 그 보이지 않는 움직임들을 무대 위로 끌어올리는 데서 시작된다.
컴퍼니의 이름은 ‘살(肉)’이라는 단어와 Subverted Anatomical Landscape라는 개념을 함께 담고 있다. 이는 인간의 신체를 고정된 형태나 기능으로 이해하는 대신, 끊임없이 변화하고 충돌하는 감각의 풍경으로 바라보려는 시도이다.
SAL의 작업에서 안무는 움직임을 배열하는 기술이 아니다. 그것은 몸 안에 축적된 기억과 감정, 욕망과 두려움을 드러내는 과정이며, 인간 존재를 해부하는 하나의 방식이다. 동일한 움직임이라도 각자의 신체를 통과하는 순간 전혀 다른 이야기가 된다.
SAL은 각 몸이 지닌 고유한 물리적·정신적 특성에 주목한다.
SAL은 인간 내면의 어둠을 외면하지 않는다. 상실, 결핍, 불안, 분노, 사랑에 대한 갈망과 같은 경험들은 창작의 중요한 출발점이 된다. 그러나 그 어둠은 절망을 위한 것이 아니다. SAL은 가장 깊은 상처 속에서도 인간 안에 남아 있는 사랑의 가능성과 생명력을 발견하려 한다. 그들이 추구하는 것은 어둠 그 자체가 아니라, 그것을 통과한 이후에야 비로소 드러나는 빛이다.
이러한 탐구는 ‘해방된 인간의 광채(The Radiance of Liberated Humanity)’라는 SAL의 철학으로 이어진다. 움직임, 음악, 공간, 조명, 의상, 연극적 구조는 하나의 유기적 언어로 결합되며, 관객은 단순히 공연을 바라보는 존재가 아니라 자신의 몸과 감각을 다시 마주하는 경험 속으로 초대된다.
SAL의 창작 과정은 예술감독 배진호가 개발한 움직임 메소드 MAGI를 기반으로 한다. MAGI는 안무가의 통제보다 신체 내부의 자율적 반응을 우선시하며, 감각의 증폭과 충동의 해방을 통해 새로운 움직임 생성 상태를 탐구한다.
SAL은 움직임을 통해 인간 존재의 가장 깊은 층위와 마주한다. 그들의 무대는 완성된 답을 제시하지 않는다. 대신 몸 안에 잠들어 있던 감각과 기억, 그리고 아직 언어가 되지 못한 무언가를 깨워낸다.
