Jinho BaeJinho Bae

Bae Jin-ho is a choreographer who unleashes the body’s impulses and sensations onto the stage without restraint.

Working primarily in contemporary dance while moving fluidly between Korean traditional dance and ballet, he translates the emotions and memories stored in the body into a distinctly contemporary language of his own. He dismantles and reconstructs the gesture, weaving music, costume, lighting, and space into a single, visceral stage experience. Through personal memory and loss, anxiety and longing, he confronts the darkness within and explores the possibility of love that remains beyond it.

In 2025, he became the youngest choreographer ever selected for ARKO Selection, Arts Council Korea’s annual program for new works. In 2026, he choreographed AHRA, a new work for the National Dance Company of Korea (NDCK), becoming the youngest choreographer in the company’s history. AHRA, his first collaboration with the company, reinterprets the sentiment embedded in the folk song Arirang through a Korean language of the body, expanding it into a contemporary movement vocabulary.

Born in Seoul, Bae majored in Korean traditional dance at the School of Dance, Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts). As a scholarship student at The Ailey School in New York, he trained extensively in the principal techniques of modern dance, including Horton, Graham, and Paul Taylor, and completed the Music and Performing Arts Professions program at NYU Steinhardt. After returning to Korea, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at K-Arts. In 2021, he founded the interdisciplinary art collective SAL (Subverted Anatomical Landscape). As a performer, he has appeared in works by international choreographers, including Shahar Binyamini’s Silicone Valley (2019) and Andrea Costanzo Martini’s Animal In (2024), and he currently teaches at several universities, including his alma mater.

He is the recipient of the Best Choreographer Award at the Critics’ Choice Dance Festival (2022), the Dance Acting Prize at the 30th Dance Arts Awards (2024), and the Best Work Award from The Korean Association of Dance Critics and Researchers (2025). From an early age, he has rapidly expanded both his own vocabulary of movement and the scope of his practice, establishing himself as a choreographer who represents the next generation of contemporary dance.

2021년 복합 예술 단체 SAL(Subverted Anatomical Landscape)을 창단했다.

About SAL

SAL is an interdisciplinary art company founded in Seoul in 2021 by choreographer and director Bae Jinho.SAL

Crossing the genre boundaries of dance to collaborate boldly with a range of artistic fields, the company drives contemporary sensation and relentless questions about human existence onto the stage. Since its founding, SAL has presented work early on at major stages and festivals at home and abroad, including MODAFE and SIDance, expanding a language entirely its own.

The company’s name carries both the Korean word ‘sal’ (flesh) and the concept of a Subverted Anatomical Landscape. Rather than reading the body as a fixed form or function, it insists on seeing the body as a terrain of sensation that is constantly deformed and in collision. Within that gaze, the body becomes a living landscape: the organs hidden beneath the skin, the nerve responses the will cannot reach, the traces left by memory and emotion, the impulses that surface and dissolve in the unconscious. The work begins by drawing these invisible motions up onto the stage.

Here, choreography is not a technique for arranging movement but a method for dissecting the human being. SAL reconfigures the circuits of thought and the irregular pulse of the organs concealed inside the shell of ‘flesh’ through an avant-garde language of the body and a charged visual structure, pulling the memory, desire, and fear accumulated in the body to the surface. For this reason, even an identical structure of movement is reborn as an entirely different narrative the moment it passes through each individual body.

SAL’s stage often unfolds as a dystopian landscape. Distorted space, precise lighting and sound, and the structures of a dismantled body accumulate into an unfamiliar, unsettling world, and the audience loses its habitual distance of spectatorship within it. This is why many describe a SAL performance as an experience unlike anything they have seen before. The auditorium becomes less a place to watch a performance than a place to confront one’s own body and senses anew.

Even when that world moves toward darkness, darkness is never the destination. Loss and lack, anxiety and anger, and the longing for love are the starting points of creation, yet SAL seeks out the vitality and the possibility of love that remain within a person even in the deepest wound. This stance leads to SAL’s guiding philosophy, ‘The Radiance of Liberated Humanity.’ Movement and music, space and lighting, costume and theatrical structure are bound together into a single organic language in service of that aim.

Through ceaseless experimentation, SAL pushes at the boundaries of body and identity, consciousness and the unconscious, mapping a terrain of the body that can be revealed through movement alone. Its stage offers no finished answers. Instead, it awakens the sensations and memories that lay dormant within the body, and something that has not yet become language.

(The Radiance of Liberated Humanity)'라는 SAL의 철학으로 이어진다.

〈X〉 brings to the stage a moment when life and machinery merge and the boundaries between them dissolve. Metal and flesh gradually become an inseparable hybrid, while the limits of human perception meet the repetitive force of machinery, raising questions about the nature of existence. The “quasi-life” born of this process points to new possibilities between the living and the nonliving.

Within relationships that are inherently unstable, the connection between bodies carries a distinct symbolism. It might best be described as a kind of religious experience, a moment of communion that leads us into a realm of mysterious faith.

Human existence often reveals its essence through the tangled web of relationships. At times, the weight of that essence tightens around us, pushing our breath to the edge and leaving physical traces.

Hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin, and cortisol, along with sweat, scent, breath, and body heat, become evidence of connection and traces of relationship,
